By Maria Moore, Your Candidate for Mayor
It has come to my attention that, although our webpage is clear that the Village sign ordinance should be changed, we did not state what that change should be. My position: Jail time as punishment for a sign code violation should be eliminated.
As the village code reads now, a violation of the sign ordinance is a misdemeanor punishable by monetary penalties and up to six months in jail. As such, a jury trial is required unless waived in writing by the person being prosecuted. The code should be amended to eliminate incarceration as a penalty. Doing so will also eliminate the requirement for a jury trial. Violations of the sign code should instead be a non-criminal offenses punishable only by monetary penalties that increase for repeat offenders.
We should expect everyone to abide by the laws of our village, and the laws should be enforced equally without favor or prejudice.
