The Board of Trustees meeting was called to order at 7:00 and the agenda was chock-full of approvals for work on Glover’s Park.  Our DPW crew has been working hard these past few weeks clearing and grading the lot, and installing the paths as well as conduits for lighting and electricity.  Marcus Stinchi has a great eye for detail, and his team installed the trees, with Marcus providing landscaping expertise.   Doug Nappi and his team installed the bocce court, and Chip Tufano will help with seeding the lawn.

Glover’s park is becoming a reality through the appropriate use of   park funds collected for this express purpose and a lot of inspiration. On a first come first serve basis, you can sponsor a teak bench, like those throughout the village, and include a memorial plaque (call Rosie at Village Hall to make arrangements 288-1654 ext 1550)

The Mayor appointed Dawn LaDu, Michelle Bugge, Karen Owens and Andrew DeRubeis to the Beautification Committee.  The spirit of volunteerism in and around village hall is infectious.  The further we can each spread this animating spirit that creates a synergy of contribution the better.  We look forward to seeing the work of Dawn, Michelle, Karen and Andrew.  Thank you.

In the public comment portion of the meeting employees of Waldbaums appealed to the village board to support them in the bankruptcy proceeding that seems to be moving towards a sale of the store to Best Yet which does not run a union shop.  The Board was uniformly sympathetic to the plight of the employees who may lose their jobs.  Village Attorney Anthony Pasca explained that the Board can not officially advocate for one business over another in the bankruptcy proceeding, but that each elected official has the right to speak in their private, not official, capacity.

Phil Grossman took a moment to encourage everyone to come out on Saturday for the First Annual Harvest Festival.  Main Street will be closed to cars west of Library Avenue and east from the intersection of Moniebogue Lane beginning at 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

The public meeting concluded with remarks by Mr. O’Dwyer, which have become predictable. While lacking the eloquence of Cato the Elder,1)Marcus Porcius Cato was a Roman Senator who, after the Roman defeat by Carthage at Cannae during the Second Punic War would regularly, no matter the Senate’s business, conclude his remarks with “…and furthermore Carthage must be destroyed.”  —“Ceterum censeo Carthaginem esse delendam.” he evinces a similar persistence.

On Saturday night, with hurricane Joaquin predicted to safely track away from the eastern seaboard, the former New York City Commissioner of Police came to the Hampton Synagogue to speak and sign copies of his memoir Vigilance.  Mayor Moore and Chief Gonce attended.

Assistant Rabbi Levi Welton posed questions and at the end of this exchange Commissioner Kelly fielded questions from the audience. These ranged from questions about gun violence to whether the United States should take in Syrian refugees.

One notable question posed was whether he would run to be the Mayor of New York City.  The answer was not a definitive “No.”  So it seems that door remains open.  Whether he does or doesn’t, his already long record of public service is admirable.
